SCENE 5: THE DESERT ROAD
Cut to the teenagers in their cars. Two hot rods, one of them a rebuilt 1948 DeSoto.
The teenagers haul up to Ernie’s gas station, eight teenagers spilling out as Ernie’s son comes out of the office. In this scene we get an introduction to the teenagers.
Ernie’s Son (EJ): “Hey Jesse, Randy. How’re yeh doin’?”
Jesse: “You gotta work tonight, EJ?”
EJ: “Yeh. It’s just till ten, though. Pretty quiet.”
Randy: “It’s always quiet around here.”
EJ: “Except when you guys come by. Whaddya need?”
Jesse: “Fill `er up!”
Randy: “I’ve got a couple cans in the trunk I need filled. Dad wants it for the tractor.”
EJ: “Hokie dokey.” (He begins to fill Jesse’s tank, and wiping down the windshield.) “Wish I was going out with you guys.”
Jesse: “Maybe we’ll be back later, if we feel like getting bored.”
