Cut to interior of the car driven by Randy.  We see the look of shock on the teenagers’ faces as they see Jesse’s car ahead plow into the shadows crowded on the road.  Tires screech, and Randy brings the car to a halt, just in front of the strange mass.  Headlights gleam, and we make out the unearthly forms of cacti that appear to be moving.  They are seven to eight feet tall.  A broken trail where Jesse plowed through them is the only evidence of Jesse’s car.

“What are those things?”

“Where’s Jesse?”

“Amy?”

Randy leans on the horn to signal to Jesse.  Somewhere, from ahead, a car horn blasts in reply.

Cut to Jesse’s car.  The kids are surrounded by the crowd of cacti, writhing shadows with painful needles scratching across the windows.

Jesse tries to start the car.  It is stuck in the sand.  Sound of wheels spinning futilely.  The hordes of cacti press against the car.  It begins to rock back and forth, pitching more and more wildly as Jesse continues, now hopelessly, to get the stuck car out of the sand.
