In the City
A Poem in Pictures
Rendered in papercuts. The white areas are background paper showing through openings cut into black paper laid on top. A third layer of paper on top of the black makes the gray borders. I did this piece in 1981-82 – my reply to the works of Franz Masereel (`Die Stadt’) and Lynd Ward (`God’s Man’).
The papercuts measure roughly 3”x4”, on the outside edge. In the summer of 1982, I had them bound into a book, and then around 1987 or `88, I de-bound the book to scan the individual cuts.
Other than that, I prefer to let the work speak for itself.
