But Tweek did not know what that monstrously big thing was.  He did not know what any of this huge noise was about.  All he knew was that he was dreadfully afraid, terrified at everything he saw.  And he knew that the sorcerer who caught him in his study would not forget to seek him out and punish him.

So Tweek snuck through the shadows, hiding in every corner, slinking quickly from one dark spot to the next.  Furtively he fled, sneaking, creeping, crawling and stealing silently through the back alleys of the city.  His flight was easier than it could have been, for all those who lived in this terrible city were paying him no attention at all.

They were all looking toward the temple where the empress was then holding her audience with her sorcerers.

So Tweek snuck through the shadows…

But at last little Tweek did manage to climb up to the very rim of the old volcano, putting the loud and noisy city behind him.  He swallowed hard to keep his terror of the sky above from overwhelming him, and tried not to look up, because it made him dizzy and terrified of falling (a sensation he’d never felt before – he didn’t like it).

Gone were his safe and cozy burrows, his smelly, stinky tunnels, and all the familiar comforts that made the life of a demon at least tolerable, if not enjoyable.

And Tweek wallowed in pity for himself.  Poor little demon, lost in the wide, wide world.  What would he eat?  Is there offal in the world beyond this dark city?  Nasty, smelly, tasty things that he could gobble?  Or would he starve to death in a day?

He’d gone not far after that, crawling in the shadows and feeling miserable, when suddenly the world behind him exploded in a huge blast of light.
